Community Centre Zandhoven

A low square facade connects to the existing small scale building around the square, where the library tower behind is a vertical accent in the background.
On the medieval square of Zandhoven, the new community centre will make a connection between the square and the hidden garden, opening it up for public use.
By setting the building apart from its neighbour, a new passage into the garden appears, making the garden public and putting the entrance in the middle of the project, in the garden.
The library is set behing the community hall in a vertical sense and mimics the tree size. Large openings allow views of the large trees to enter the interior spaces.
The building surrounds an existing garden with the monumental Vredegerecht and some monumental trees.
The facade consists of a pattern of ceramic scales, referring to the ancient nickname of the villagers - ‘Doppenrapers’.
The vertical library is a sort of bell tower, nestling in the trees, making the project well visible in the village.

─ In cooperation with BobMcMaster

The rural community of Zandhoven in Flandres, Belgium has selected Bob McMaster and krft to build a new community centre at the medieval square where the village has been founded.

The program consists of a library, a community hall and a youth centre, to harbor the active community life of all ages.

Bob McMaster and krft decided to explode the large building mass into smaller volumes in order to capture the small scale of the village. At the same time, this allowed the building to step aside from the 16th century 'Vredegerecht' next door and allow a vista into the lush garden behind. By positioning the entrance at the heart of the constellation - in this garden - all parts can be used seperately and together by choice.

The complex volume is clad with a graphical ceramic skin, referring to a pine cone. This related to the nickname of the people from Zandhoven - Doppenrapers.
